“Like writing, graphic design is increasingly becoming a communication tool that any one of us can easily pick up to say something. But this is not to say that graphic design has become just a tool for personal expression. Rather, this visual language has become open to a diversity of expressions. As history has shown in Singapore and around the world, it is the graphic design studios with the steadfast spirit of independence which have, and will continue, to create the possibilities that could become tomorrow’s trends or standards, keeping graphic design alive for all.”

INDEPENDENCE: The history of graphic design in Singapore since the 1960s is the first-ever book that documents the evolution of Singapore's graphic design industry and community since the country's independence in 1965. It looks at this development through the eyes of independent graphic design studios and their responses to the socio-economic and cultural conditions of the times. The book was commissioned by The Design Society and is available from them or at bookstores in Singapore such as BooksActually, Basheer Graphic Books and Kinokuniya.
